What is Bloatware?

Bloatware is any application which is pre-installed and cannot be uninstalled by the user.

Bloatware can also refer to System software that was originally installed as part of an operating system installation, but it is not used or needed for most people’s purposes.

Some examples are:

  • A media player app if you don’t have a way to play music from your phone,
  • A video editing suite if you do not own a camera.
  • An office suite like Microsoft Office when there are more than one free alternatives available on Android devices such as LibreOffice Writer or Kingsoft WPS Office.

The term “bloatware” has been around since at least 1989 in reference to computer programs that take up excessive storage space without providing much in return.
